Sometimes even healthy foods can be dangerous. The French Tribune did an article on bacteria in bean sprouts. CBC’s investigative team found high levels of bacteria in packaged sprouts like mung beans and alfalfa sprouts common in grocery stores, served in salad bars and Asian dishes Canada wide.
Dirty Produce by CBC
Facts:
- 44 packages tested across the country by Kevin Allen, a microbiology professor at the University of British Columbia
- 93% testing positive for high levels of enterococci bacteria, an indicator of fecal contamination.
- 5 voluntary recalls of sprouts in the past two years because of salmonella contamination across North America, causing hundreds of people to fall sick with cramps and stomach pains.
- Washing them before consumption does not help much.
- Of the 106 samples of bagged vegetables Allen tested, 79% of the herbs and 50% of the spinach had similar bacterial contamination
- According to Health Canada, outbreaks of food-borne illnesses have been caused by seeds becoming contaminated by animal manure in the field or during storage.
. Cooking thoroughly is the best way of killing the bacteria.
