Codeine is a widely used drug. How many people experience some of these side effects while on codeine yet go on another drug for a side effect they are experiencing? Say for example someone is on codeine for back pain. They eventually start to develop stomach pain and go back to the Dr and are then put on stomach pills, instead of trying an alternative treatment or even suspecting the codeine. Or say a woman experiences mood changes and they are told it is menopause and put of hormones. Personally I think this goes on a lot in society today. Medicating the side effects. It seems very out of control to me.

We really should reporting side effects to the FDA. I know I haven’t personally but with the long list of side effects I been through I should have.

I found some sources for the side effects from codeine, see below. I hope if you are a codeine user, you will take this list seriously and consider that it could be the culprit:

Codeine is absorbed quickly from the GI tract and it’s first pass through the liver results in very little loss of the drug. This contrasts with morphine in which over 90% of the drug is metabolized in the first pass through the liver resulting in a considerable loss of potency when administered orally.

Narcotics induce an “opioid analgesia” by altering the perception of pain at the spinal cord and brain. They also affect emotional responses to pain. Opioids have stimulating effects as well because they block inhibitory neurotransmitters. Repeated use of these drugs can cause long-term changes in the way the nervous system functions.

Codeine has a variety of recognizable side effects, including:

  • stomach bleeding
  • kidney and liver damage
  • “itchies”
  • constipation
  • nausea
  • hangover
  • tiny pupils, blurred vision, poor night vision
  • impair your ability to drive
  • lowered heart rate, blood pressure and breathing
  • disorientation, hallucinations
  • convulsions
  • depression
  • sexual problems
  • agitation, tremors, and seizures

What side effects can this medication cause?

Codeine may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • dizziness
  • lightheadedness
  • headache
  • drowsiness
  • mood changes
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • constipation
  • stomach pain
  • difficulty urinating

Some side effects can be serious. If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:

  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat
  • rash
  • itching
  • hives
  • changes in vision
  • seizures

Codeine may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while you are taking this medication.

If you experience a serious side effect, you or your doctor may send a report to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program online [at http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch] or by phone [1-800-332-1088].

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:
•allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
•breathing problems
•cold, clammy skin
•fast or slow heartbeat
•feeling faint or lightheaded, falls
•trouble passing urine or change in the amount of urine

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
•dry mouth
•nausea, vomiting
•pinpoint pupils

This list may not describe all possible side effects. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

See my article on alternatives to tylenol has potential for liver and kidney toxicity, even death for some alternative pain relief:

I did some research on the real effects of Tylenol, it might surprise you. What side effects may result from long-term use/high doses of Acetaminophen? What about your liver and kidneys? Mixing with alcohol is even more dangerous yet how many people mix the two everyday?

What can we do? There are many reasons for headaches, diet, stress, misalignment. If we tackle them one at a time we can get closer to the answer instead of masking it with pain pills that lead to further problems. One of our local doctors in Toronto has some great advice on the perils of painkillers, tylenol toxicity and its Alternatives by Zoltan P. Rona, MD, M.Sc. I added some information from his website below that he suggested as alternatives to Tylenol such as Ginger Root, Boswellia, Bromelain, Curcumin and more. See last article.

  • The Facts Of Analgesics (Painkillers)
  • Potential For Liver / Kidney Toxicity

Despite universal acceptance, references have been reported of potential liver and kidney toxicity. These warning reports should alert all users of Tylenol, particularly those who chronically use maximum doses of the drug, to these serious risk factors. Fortunately, patient awareness and routine liver and kidney profile testing will discover any organ abnormality.

The American Association of Poison Control Centers shows the following statistics for reported acetaminophen poisonings in 2001:

    • Total reported exposures: 57,516
    • Reported exposures, under the age of 19: 40,774
    • Unintentional overdoses: 35,705
    • Intentional overdoses: 20,002
    • Total treated for the exposure: 24,934
    • Impact on health from the incident: none, 15,029; minor, 6,223; moderate, 3,138; major, 829; fatal: 120

    Dangerous Side Effects

Serious acetaminophen side effects pose a much greater risk than many consumers realize. In some cases, an individual may experience an acetaminophen side effect and attribute it to some other cause. Sadly, some users even suffer liver failure due to acetaminophen use without their ever knowing.

Some of the more severe acetaminophen side effects include:

    • Acute liver toxicity
    • Allergic reactions including swelling, difficulty breathing, closing of throat, and more
    • Abdominal pain
    • Nausea
    • Unusual bleeding or bruising
    • Death

    Liver Failure, Death, and Acetaminophen

Acetaminophen becomes a toxin when large amounts are ingested or under other specific conditions. The U.S. Acute Liver Failure Study Group found that acetaminophen poisoning is the leading cause of liver failure in the nation, accounting for approximately half of all cases. Some of these instances of liver failure occur even when following the dosage recommendations printed on the bottle.

The following conditions can significantly increase the risk of liver failure and death in acetaminophen users:

    • Heavy alcohol use
    • The simultaneous use of more than one medication containing acetaminophen
    • The simultaneous use of another drug that affects the liver

If you have decreased liver function, hepatitis, AIDS, malnutrition, kidney disease, anorexia nervosa, or drink alcohol on a regular basis, you should not take acetaminophen without first consulting your doctor. Diabetics should note that acetaminophen may alter blood sugar test results.

I included this article earlier in medical mistakes and unnecessary surgeries but I wanted to touch on it again to share my recent experience and am hoping that other women will share their similar experiences.

I have had abdominal pain for quite some time. My Gynecologist, Dr Pettle delivers babies and does hormonal balancing so he sent me to another gynecologist for an opinion. Within 10 minutes without any tests, she felt my abdomen and wanted to do a complete hysterectomy.

The horrific look on my face told her I wasn’t too keen on that idea. I told her no, I wanted to keep my parts and asked why I had the pain. She said it was from the cyst I had and endometriosis and that we could do a partial hysterectomy. I told her I just wanted to rule out anything serious like cancer.

    Here is the article:

Unnecessary surgery exposed! Why 60% of all

surgeries are medically unjustified and how

surgeons exploit patients to generate profits

Friday, October 07, 2005 by: Alexis Black, citizen journalist

Women are at an especially high risk of unnecessary

Women may be at an especially high risk for unwarranted operations, since hysterectomies and Cesarean sections also top the list of “overprescribed and unnecessary” surgeries. Of the approximately 750,000 hysterectomies performed each year, 90 percent are unnecessary, writes Goldberg in Alternative Medicine, making the removal of a woman’s uterus one of the most commonly performed unnecessary surgeries. And the risk that comes with an unwarranted hysterectomy is high. “Each year 750,000 hysterectomies are performed and 2,500 women die during the operation. These are not sick women, but healthy women who go into the hospital and do not come out,” says Dr. Herbert Goldfarb, a gynecologist and assistant clinical professor at New York University’s School of Medicine, in Null’s Woman’s Encyclopedia Of Natural Healing

Women are also frequently subjected to Caesarean sections they don’t really need. With an estimated 920,000 Cesarean births performed each year, the Cesarean has become the “most common major surgery in America” and it is four times more likely a woman will give birth via cesarean section today than it was in 1970, according to The Medical Racket by Martin L. Gross. Women are also at special risk for receiving unwarranted surgeries because of the results of a mammogram, since the high rate of false positives in mammography often leads to invasive procedures. Women who do not even have cancer to begin with are treated for breast cancer, Goldberg writes. That’s right: These women’s bodies are carved up and altered and they aren’t even sick. So why does this happen?

Needless surgeries mean higher profits for doctors

    and hospitals

It may seem unfathomable to think a doctor could be so careless as to perform an operation that doesn’t need to be done, but it has been happening for years, from the more minor routinely- performed tonsillectomies of the past to the invasive heart procedures, hysterectomies, back surgeries and more of today. “(T)he reality is that unnecessary surgery, whether performed by doctors who operate out of ignorance, self-delusion, or simple greed has long plagued medicine and today still reaches epidemic proportions.” writes Gross. It may be hard to stomach the idea that doctors are capable of operating out of greed for more money, but some feel that is exactly what is happening. “American physicians are generally way too eager to use the surgeon’s knife to carve up and chop out whatever they think is ailing you, at great expense to you and great profit to them and the hospitals they work for,” write Earl Mindell and Virginia Hopkins in Prescription Alternatives.

It is quite bizarre, I had my own experience a couple of months ago. My gynecologist sent to another gynecologist for a consult for something he doesn’t do and she wanted to give me a complete hysterectomy within the first 10 minutes. I told her I liked my parts and I wanted to keep them, I just wanted to know if there was any concern from my pain.

After the second visit she realized that I just wanted to know what was going on and if I had cancer or not.  The tests came back negative but she still recommend removal of my right ovary and take some other things out (don’t get it, it was removed when I was 18). I opted out, went back to Dr Pettle and he said the natural medicines that I was taking will take care of the cyst and the pain I have. I trust him because he got rid of them before without surgery or dangerous drugs like the Lupron. The pain is getting better and eventually I think it will disappear with time with the addition of fading out the mucous and dioxin causing foods in my diet.

My opinion is that I don’t think I needed my ovary removed when I was 18 and I don’t think they needed to give me the toxic drug Lupron to get rid of the other cyst either (which it didn’t by the way). I was just a kid though and thought Doctors knew best. We can heal from within with the right direction if there is no permanent damage.

Personally, I believe that my cysts come from dairy products and the endometriosis is from meat protein but that is my experience of what it does in my body. I am A blood type. I know dairy, beef and wheat gives me a lot of mucous throughout my body, arthritis pain and I have trouble breathing. I am lactose intolerant as well.

My point is that if we stuff a towel in a leaky pipe, it isn’t fixing the problem. I believe health care is too quick to take parts out without correcting what is causing the problem in the first place. Please share your experience in comments.

I am going to go back a bit in time here:

    Albert Einstein

Technological progress is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal.

I love Albert! Land of the free? I am glad I live in Canada although what the US does effects us all, especially the FDA and the US government. Who is overseeing their decisions by the way? We need world government!

I am in awe that it has come to this. The government wants to control your chemical intake through food, drugs, inoculations, cosmetics, personal grooming and skin care. Not to mention the chemicals that are sprayed on the ground, in the air or in your home as paint or cleaning products. Now they want to control your right to natural information. Will they not stop until there isn’t a natural product or green spot left on earth?

I don’t think Mike Adams is too far off with his zombie videos. This is serious folks and we need to step up and take action before it is too late. Our children need us to protect their future.

Over 75 websites were seized and shut down last week, and there is no indication that the government will stop such efforts.

Government could shut down alternative health websites

Where is all this going? Today the U.S. government is targeting websites focused on copyright violations, but if the public tolerates this government-sponsored censorship of the web, it’s only a matter of time before these government powers are expanded to control the content of the internet.

The lyrics reveal the truth about dangers of vaccines

Here are some of the lyrics to “Vaccine Zombie”:

Standin’ in line for the vaccine shot
Hope I get mine cause believe it or not
I think I might die less I take what they got
My brain’s too fried so I give it no thought, no thought

Cause the FDA said it’s safe for me
The drug companies claim that it’s made for me
And the government, they gonna pay for me
It’s not too late for me, is it?

Now it’s my turn to be injected.
They say it’s gonna hurt but I’ll be protected.
When they give the word I do as I’m directed.
I’m not the kind of person to do something unexpected

I do everything the doctors tell me
Swallow all those pills they sell me
I’m afraid that germs might kill me!
    Vaccine zombie, zombie

I forgot how to think for myself
    I don’t understand a thing about health
I do the same as everyone else
    I’m a vaccine zombie, zombie
